Credit Assistance
The Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act of 1998 (TIFIA) makes available three forms of credit assistance for surface transportation projects of national or regional significance: secured (direct) loans, loan guarantees, and standby lines of credit.

Research Funds
Funds available for research include high speed rail demonstration funds, Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA), MAGLEV funds, and University grants.

Rail Opportunities Under TEA-21
TEA-21 provides federal funding for transportation planning at the state and local levels and establishes the rules for such funding.

Funding For High Speed Rail
Funding assistance includes corridor planning grants and assistance, funds for grade crossing hazard elimination, rail demonstration funding opportunities, and funding for MAGLEV.

Passenger Rail Assistance
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) administers grants to support both operations and capital improvement of passenger railroads.

Railroad Rehabilitation And Improvement Financing
Under this program, direct loans and loan guarantees are provided up to $3.5 billion. Up to $1 billion is reserved for projects benefiting freight railroads other than Class I carriers.
