Awards

Varian has won a number of prestigious awards and received numerous honors over the years. Some of the highlights:

2011: R&D 100 Award from R&D magazine, for the company's TrueBeam™ and TrueBeam STx systems for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery. The "R&D Awards" are widely known to industry, government, and academia as a mark of excellence demonstrating that a product realizes one of the most innovative ideas of the year.

2011: Red Dot Product Design Award for the company’s TrueBeam™ system for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery. This award competition, which is held by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, a German design organization, dates back to 1955 and is now the world’s largest and most distinguished design competition. The prize has established itself internationally as one of the most sought after quality marks for good design.

2010: Top 100 Military Friendly Employers Award — Varian Medical Systems has been named among the “Top 100 Military Friendly Employers” by G.I. Jobs magazine. Out of a pool of 5,000 companies that were assessed, Varian was selected as one of the top 100 military-friendly employers and shares this distinction with companies like Lockheed Martin, Bank of America, and Southwest Airlines.

2009: Varian's ARIA® Oncology Information Management Software Ranked #1 in the '2009 Top 20 Best in KLAS Awards: Software & Professional Services' Report. The Top 20 Best in KLAS Awards report is a high-level overview of performance ratings for vendors offering software, professional services, and medical equipment to the healthcare industry. Ratings are compiled from evaluations received during the 12-month period prior to its publication from healthcare professionals in North America.

2009: Silver Healthy Workplace Award for Varian’s X-ray Products Business in Salt Lake City. The award was for fostering a workplace environment that helps employees to improve their health and nutrition. The award was given by the Utah Department of Health’s Council for Worksite Health Promotion, a group that advises Utah-based companies on how to better care for the health and wellness of their employees.

2009: BusinessWeek 50—Varian was named number 12 in the BusinessWeek 50 listing, the magazine's ranking of the nation's best-performing large public corporations in the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index. "Varian, headed by Tim Guertin, is nicely positioned to do well by doing good," the magazine stated. "Since it was spun out of a technology conglomerate in 1999, the Palo Alto (Calif.) company has thrived in the market for equipment that delivers tumor-killing radiation doses to cancer patients."

2009: IndustryWeek 50—For the third time in three years, Varian was named one of IndustryWeek's "50 Best Manufacturing Companies" in the U.S. The formula for identifying the companies on this list factors in revenue growth and profit margin over the past three years, with the most recent year results weighted most heavily. The reviewers also considered three-year performance in four other financial ratios; return on equity, return on assets, asset turnover and inventory turns.

2008: Varian Ranked No. 1 in 2008 KLAS Report on Oncology IT Vendors. This was an independent study released by KLAS, a research firm that specializes in monitoring and reporting on the performance of healthcare vendors. According to the June 2008 Oncology report, Varian Medical Systems is "considered by many providers to have the most developed and comprehensive oncology solution."

2008: BusinessWeek 50—Varian was named number 26 in the BusinessWeek 50 listing, the magazine's ranking of the nation's best-performing large public corporations in the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index. "Varian Medical Systems has long been thought of as the Microsoft of radiation-therapy equipment used to treat cancer," the magazine stated. "With its 50%-plus market share, methodical rollout of products, and distribution clout with hospitals, the Palo Alto (Calif.) company dominates its space."

2008: R&D 100 Award—Varian received a 2008 “R&D 100 Award” from R&D magazine, for the company’s Smart Segmentation™ automatic contouring utility, which significantly reduces the time needed to develop a radiotherapy treatment plan.

2008: IndustryWeek 50—Varian was again named one of IndustryWeek's "50 Best Manufacturing Companies" in the U.S. "Varian reported a very productive fiscal year 2007, marked by respectable financial performance, opening of a new manufacturing plant in China and two acquisitions," the magazine stated. "In addition several major product introductions stand ready to position the company for growth in coming years. Varian Medical Systems has tripled in size since becoming a stand-alone company in 1999."

2007: IndustryWeek 50—Varian was named one of IndustryWeek's "50 Best Manufacturing Companies" in the U.S. According to IndustryWeek, its annual list of the 50 best manufacturing companies "not only affirms that manufacturing is alive and well in the U.S.A., but it also enables us to get a glimpse into what makes a manufacturer world class."

2007: 21st Century Achievement Award, 2007 Computerworld Honors Program. This award recognizes individuals and organizations that use information technology to benefit society. Click here for a ComputerWorld magazine article about the technology that led to this prestigious recognition.

2007: BusinessWeek 50—Varian was named number 14 in the BusinessWeek 50 listing, the magazine's ranking of the nation's best-performing large public corporations in the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index. "These star performers in the class of 2007 are setting the agenda in their industries," the magazine stated. "This year's list is chock full of companies that are rewriting the rules in their industries. They are the agitators, the pioneers, and the game-changers that are leading the way in the 21st century."

2006: R&D 100 Award from R&D magazine, for the company's On-Board Imager® device for image-guided radiotherapy. The "R&D Awards" are widely known to industry, government, and academia as a mark of excellence demonstrating that a product realizes one of the most innovative ideas of the year.

2006: Forbes "Global High Performer," a distinction given by Forbes magazine to "big companies that are absolutely great at what they do." Varian was named "Global High Performer" in the health care equipment and services category.

2006: Silver Mercury Award from the International Academy of Communications Arts and Sciences for the company’s trade show exhibit at the 2006 ASTRO (American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology) annual meeting. The Mercury Awards are an international competition honoring excellence in public relations and corporate communications.

2004: Forbes “Platinum 400” list and "Best Managed Health Care Equipment and Services Company" for 2003. Forbes magazine added Varian Medical Systems to its prestigious "Platinum 400" list, and then named Varian the "Best Managed Health Care Equipment and Services Company" for 2003. To create the annual Platinum list, Forbes looked at both long- and short-term financial returns, plus other performance and valuation measures. The magazine then selected one company as the best managed of its group.

2004: Salt Lake City/Pollution Prevention Award. Varian's X-Ray Products business received a pollution prevention award for pollution prevention efforts in 2003. This was Varian's fourth year winning this award.

2004: Indo American Physicists' Organization Award "in recognition of outstanding contributions to radiation oncology," for the company’s leadership in developing intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for treating cancer.

2003: Special Achievement Award from Design News magazine, in their national engineering award competition for the company’s development of high-resolution IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) for the treatment of cancer.
