Dynamic Adaptive Radiotherapy (DART) - The dawn of a new era

Patients present new clinical challenges every day. And unless treatments are adapted daily as well, treatment goals may not be met. Now Dynamic Adaptive Radiotherapy (DART™) makes it easy to adapt dynamically to the ever-changing patient.

DART can be performed daily in the treatment room (online), during treatment (real time), or it can occur between doses (offline), depending on the nature and timing of new patient information. Adaptive therapy can take three forms:

  • Offline adaptation occurs between treatment fractions with current information to adapt treatments for gradual changes in patient anatomy, physiology, or complementary therapy. This allows clinicians to easily generate a new, more accurate and effective plan as gradual changes occur.
  • Real-time adaptation involves RPM™ respiratory gating to gate the beam during treatment to account for organ motion. Treatment parameters are adapted in real time to conform to the patient anatomy. The system combines continuous patient monitoring during treatment with preplotted target trajectories to ensure the maximum dose is delivered to the target while avoiding critical organs.
  • Online adaptation adapts the treatment based on new information on that day to account for variations in patient anatomy or physiology, which cannot be corrected by repositioning the patient alone. Online adaptation ensures that the treatment objectives are continuously met for the ever-changing patient.
